Kenosha, WI – August 21, 2019 – This summer, over 40 teen members and five chaperones from the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha experienced a five day, all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. Youth from all over the state of Wisconsin took similar trips to D.C. thanks to Herb Kohl Philanthropies.
Students visited several museums and national monuments including the National Museum of the American Indian, Arlington National Cemetery, the National Museum of Natural History and more. The group even met Senator Tammy Baldwin.
The goal of this trip was to make history come alive, expand horizons, and give youth an opportunity to imagine themselves as future leaders. This trip also emphasized leadership development and expands upon the positive youth engagement that Boys & Girls Clubs of Kenosha provide every day. Funding from Herb Kohl Philanthropies covered all meals, lodging, exhibits and travel expenses.
The feedback from Club teens has been positive, as they are appreciative for the opportunity to travel and learn.
“I enjoyed the National Museum of the American Indian because I learned so much,” said BGCK member Akira Spann. “Many of the exhibits were about things I had not learned in school like the broken treaties or the relocation marches.”
“I am glad that I was able to go on this trip because I don’t know if I would have been able to visit DC without it,” said BGCK member Veronica Reed.
