Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha Reopens After School Program at Jefferson Elementary

Kenosha, WI – July 31, 2018 – As part of its long range strategic plan to have school based programs, the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha is excited to reopen its Jefferson Elementary School site for the 2018/2019 school year. The program was made possible in large part thanks to a partnership with Kenosha County, Kenosha Unified School District and the Club.

The site will be named the Laken Family Jefferson Elementary Extension in honor of Tom Laken, Jr. who recently passed. “Tom Jr. and the Laken family have always had a place in their hearts for kids that need us in the community,” said BGCK CEO, Jake McGhee.

“Tom Jr. would have been honored to have his name affiliated with such a worthwhile project,” said Nancy Laken. “The Boys and Girls Club is so geared to aid the community to prepare our children for the future.”

BGCK used to operate several school based sites as part of the 21st Century Community Learning Center (CLC) program, including an after-school program at Jefferson Elementary. These programs have been eliminated over the years due to decreased funding and have been replaced by for-profit childcare centers. When the BGCK was in Jefferson Elementary School in years past, nearly 75 youth benefitted from the programming each day.

“After school programming can be a major expense for hard working families,” said McGhee. “I’m excited that we can offer our programming to families for just $20 per child per year or $30 per family. I hope his is the first of many schools we reopen.”

The site will be open Monday through Thursday from 3:10pm – 5:30pm and on Friday from 12:06pm – 5pm starting on Tuesday, September 4th, 2018 through Friday, June 7th, 2019. A daily snack will be provided through The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

The Laken Family Jefferson Elementary Extension site will provide homework help and enrichment programs such as character and leadership development, health and life skills, the arts, sports, fitness and recreation.

Families can register for the Laken Family Jefferson Elementary Extension now at the front desk of the Boys & Girls Club, or at Jefferson Elementary School’s open house on August 20th, from 5pm – 6:30pm.
