Walmart Food Grant
With the generous food grant that we received from Walmart this summer we were able to purchase healthy foods for our members. On Friday, August 20th we made Strawberry and Banana Smoothies for all the club members. During the summer program we had the member's
participate in fitness activities and learn about eating healthy.

Discovery World
About 40 members took a field trip to Discovery World in Milwaukee. The members got to experience the journey of the world of technology and the world of water.

Little Brewers Tailgating Field Trip
On Thursday, July 8th 22 members from the "Little Brewers" baseball program got to attend the Little Brewers Tailgate Party at Miller Park. The day started out with a cookout, meeting Ryan Braun, playing in the Kids Zone in Miller Park and watching the Milwaukee Brewers play the San
Francisco Giants.

All Site Talent Show
On Wednesday, May 19th the Boys & Girls Club had its 3rd Annual All Site Talent Show. We had 24 acts and 55 members that participated. Congratulations to all the members for all their hard work they put into performing their talent.

Community Clean-up
Wednesday May 12th the Boys & Girls Club participated in a community wide clean up as part of Boys & Girls Club Month. Participant members came from 8 afterschool sites, the Madrigrano Center, 10 sports teams, The Youth Empowerment /Employment program, and lots of volunteers from the community. Members cleaned up parks, bike paths, school yards, beaches, and empty lots in the 17 districts of Kenosha, Pleasant Prairie, and Somers. An accurate tally of our clean-up efforts will be posted soon.

All Site Spelling Bee
The afterschool programs held an all site spelling bee hosted by the Madrigrano Center on May 4th, 2010. Youth from 8 school sites and the drop-in center participated in The Bee. Local spelling bees were held at each site where one winning student from each grade level was selected to move on to the All-Site Bee.

Healthy Habits Recipe Contest
At our CLC sites we held a "Healthy Habits Recipe Contest." It was open to all the girls to come up with a healthy recipe for a chance to win an American Girl Doll. The winners of the contest are: Maya Johnson-Frank CLC, Karla Escobedo-Roosevelt Kid's Stop, Bailey Miller-McKinley CLC, Jahnai Harley-EBSOLA CLC and Courtney Zirbel-Jefferson CLC. Brewers Game
Madrigrano members attended the third Brewers game of the season. After being down the first inning 3-0, Brewers came back to win against the Rockies in the 9th inning. Members were sitting right behind the dugout to experience the victory.

Alice in Wonderland Week
Spring Break was Alice In Wonderland week at the Madrigrano Center. Members read adapted versions of through the looking glass and participated in Alice themed activities all week. Members made "mini-me" pictures where they shrunk themselves into Alice in Wonderland scenes. Then they played The Queen's Croquet with flamingo mallets, hedgehog balls, and human wickets! Members worked hard to impress the queen so she wouldn't say, "Off with your head!!!" On Thursday, members had a Mad Hatters Tea Party during snack where everyone performed silly tasks with the Mad Hatter.

Easter Egg Hunt
The Madrigrano Center had a backyard Easter egg hunt before we had our Easter Break. Our older members teamed up with younger members for a team hunt and then brought their loot inside to divide it up and determine who collected the most eggs. Some members even got an April Fools surprise in their eggs!

Cartooning with Josh Frazer and John Hambrock
Professional comic artist Josh Frazer and award winning national cartoonist John Hambrock came to the Madrigrano Center to teach a cartooning/comics class to our youth. Members learned the process of creating comics from initial sketch to inking and publishing. At the end of the class, members were given pocket sketch-books to encourage them to draw inspiration from their daily lives.

BGC IDOL
Madrigrano Members participated in the spring BGC Idol, performing a variety of acts including singing, dancing, poetry reading, playing instruments, and even magic tricks.

CLC Chess Tournament
Members of 7 afterschool kids stop sites participated in a chess tournament. Members have been practicing their moves with 4 coaches from KUSD all year to prepare for the tournament. The winners were 1st place McKinnley, 2nd place EBSOLA, and 3rd place Brass.

Bucks v. Heat & Dwayne Wade
The Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha was invited to bring a youth to the Milwaukee Bucks vs. Miami Heat. After watching the game, Keshawnn met Dwayne Wade and listened to him speak about his experience as a player and the importance of post-secondary education.

Optimist International Oratorical Contest
Kenosha's local Noon Optimist Club sponsored their annual oratorical contest for the Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha. The topic for this years contest was "Cyber Communication: Progress or Problem?" Ten youth wrote speeches giving their opinion on the topic. Jonathan Hill, Brennan Battle, and Alysia Collins won first place in their age groups. Jadah Lopez and Sydney Bennett were awarded second place. We would also like to recognize Elizabeth Young and Casandra Gregory for their outstanding performances! Youth of the Year Madison
The Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha Youth of the Year, Demarkus Wright, traveled to the Wisconsin Youth of the Year competition in Madison on Monday, March 2nd where he presented his speech "What the Boys and Girls Club Means to Me". While there, he made connections with the other youth candidates and met the state representatives from the Kenosha area.

MLK Day of Service at Cancer Treatment Centers
For this years MLK Day of Service, members created cards for cancer pantients at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America. On February 24th, members delivered these cards. While they were there, they toured the facility and learned about the potential impact that their service would have on people at the center.

Youth of the Year Awards Banquet
On Wednesday, February 17th the Boys and Girls Club honored many of our valuable volunteers and contributors. Among these awards were the Board Award, Staff Member of the Year awards, Sports Family of the Year, Parent Volunteer and Youth Volunteer. We also presented the Sports Family of the Year, The Mary Frost-Ashley Patron Saint Award, and the Helping Hands Award.
This was also our opportunity to select our 2009 Youth of the Year winner from our amazing nominees Lorrie Watts, Tanner Sosa, and Demarkus Wright. Our 2009 Youth of the Year is Demarkus Wright, a junior from Reuther High School. He will be continueing on to the Wisconsin State Youth of the Year Competition on March 1st and 2nd in Madison Wisconsin.

Torch Club/Keystone Recycling Program
Torch Club/Keystone Club have been working on a community recycling program. Through a Keep America Beautiful grant. Members distributed the recycling bins to Wilson elementary school and in our Boys and Girls Club facilities.

Carthage Women's Lacrosse visits Madrigrano
The entire Carthage Women's Lacrosse team sponsored a fitness, leadership, and goal setting activity at the Madrigrano Center. The volunteers demonstrated lacrosse techniques and let the youth experiment with the sport. Then the youth and volunteers split into small groups to talk about goal setting and to write a plan for their own goals. Finally, the group reconvened in the gym to do a leadership activity and participate in lifetime fitness activities that the kids can do at home. The youth sincerely enjoyed their one on one time with the team members and many of them asked when the team was coming back.

Wellness Fair
The Wellness Fair served more than 100 members this year. Members from all the CLC afterschool sites and the Madrigrano Center recieved dental screenings by generous volunteer dentists and staff of Dental Associates.
Participants rotated through 5 wellness activity stations, a health related craft project, physical fitness activity, Tooth Relay Race, a "Five Senses” game and then made their own healthy snack. Participants were sent home with a new toothbrush and toothpaste and a report from the dentist about their dental screening. LMI Packaging Solutions generously sponsored an incentive program for the youth of the CLC afterschool program/Madrigrano Center Power Hour. Youth who participated our Power Hour homework help and academics program more than three times a week were entered into a drawing to win a 32" television. |

Youth of the Year Judging at Platinum Systems
Youth of the Year judging for The Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha was held at Platinum Systems. Three judges, Matt Carlson and Dennis Duchene from the Boys and Girls Club Board and Larry Nelson form the Noon Optimist Club listened to each of our three candidates give their speeches about how the Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha has impacted their lives. The selection committee had a tough choice this year. The 2009 Youth of the Year will be announced at the Youth of the Year Awards Banquet on February 17th.

MLK Day of Service
Members of the Boys and Girls Club Madrigrano Center and CLC sites participated in the 2010 MLK Day of Service Challenge. Youth created more than 300 cards and small crafts for residents of a local elderly home and patients at the Cancer Treatment Center of America at the Midwestern Regional Medical Center. |
