Kenosha, WI – July 11, 2019 – During the 2017-2018 school year, less than 10 kids per day attended the Jefferson Elementary afterschool program, operated by a for-profit daycare center. In September 2018, thanks to Kenosha County, the Boys & Girls Club opened the Laken Family Jefferson Elementary Extension Program at Jefferson and served an average of 53 kids per day during the 2018-2019 school year.
There was an obvious need for affordable after school care, and at just $20 per year or $30 per family, the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha was able to meet that need for Jefferson Elementary kids and families.
“Some of our families have found that they are able to balance work and life better because they have this option for their children after school,” said Kathy Walsh, Principal at Jefferson Elementary School. “They have somewhere for their children to go where they know they are cared for, safe are fed.”
The new site was open for 173 days. On average, each member attended 94 days. 8,146 healthy meals were served and 8,091 hours were spent on Power Hour, which is time dedicated to homework help and educational activities.
“If I didn’t come here after school I would be at home on my phone or watching TV,” said Mahleiah Adams-Bennett, a Club member who attends the Laken Family Jefferson Elementary Extension Program.
The attendance numbers at the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha have been rising steadily over the past few years. From 2015 to 2018, the average daily attendance in the youth and teen centers at the Club has increased by 249%, from 67 to 234 kids per day. With the building nearly at capacity, part of the Club’s long-range plan is to open more school based sites, in order to reach more kids in need. It costs the Club about $72,000 to offer after school programming at one site for one school year.
